GREER, Ariz. - The historic Greer Lodge has burned to the ground.

The fire started after 4:00 a.m. Tuesday and destroyed the building.

John Raven was staying at the Greer Lodge and said they were given a five minute warning to evacuate.

Barbara Keehn, who is staying at the nearby Molly Butler Lodge, said it was a scary sight - "it looked like the forest was on fire." Looking out of her window around 6:30 a.m., she said the fire appeared to be contained, but you could still see a lot of smoke.

Caitlin Sandhal, the daughter of the Greer Lodge owner Doug Sandhal, said her father recently had some renovations done to the building. She adds that they're all in shock, but she wouldn't put it past him to rebuild the lodge because Greer means a lot to him.

Doug Sandhal said there was no damage done to the 70 cabins surrounding the lodge.

The Lodge's restaurant and cabins remain open.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is unknown.

The Greer Lodge was built in 1948 and contained 10 rooms and a restaurant. It's a popular eastern Arizona getaway spot in the White Mountains. Sandhal says he will rebuild the lodge.

As we were walking this morning, we noticed smoke on the horizon in the direction of Greer. We thought it was a control burn, but I wonder if it was the lodge? The smoke is just to the left of the tower.

A rabbit we saw on our walk. We're seeing lots of them now.
